Burn Morel Maps and E-Book

Burn Morels: A Modern Forager’s Guide to Finding Mushrooms

2024 Burn Morel Maps are HERE!

Our burn maps are curated, meaning we have spent hours sorting through the fires – removing many poor choices and also fires in areas that are inaccessible (and unlawful) for picking. We rank the fires in each state and focus on “A” rated fires which are sure to produce massive fruiting if the weather cooperates.

The maps show fires and their perimeters using a Google Map rendering engine. This includes a satellite basemap and a hybrid terrain basemap (topo + roads).

Additionally, we offer a USFS overlays on most maps. Use the USFS especially for more accurate road accessibility information than Google.

New map tech has allowed us to add a few very cool new features on A and B rated fires – burn morel prediction maps and burn severity maps for 2024 are ready now! We created an algorithm that uses terrain data such as tree cover, tree type, elevation, and aspect, to predict where burn morels are most likely to be fruiting within each fire. The prediction map is color coded in the style of a heat map, where yellow and yellow/green denote hot spots! You will also find a new map layer showing burn severity for A and B rated fires in the 11 Western states. This tool uses a comparison model that looks at pre-fire and post fire satellite visuals to calculate severity. Cloud cover can get in the way, so it’s not perfect but it does a pretty good job!

We take many of the top fires and break them down providing editorial content about where to start in each fire.

Additional Benefits:

  • The 2024 forest type map
  • USFS Motor Vehicle  map
  • 2021 – 2024 Stewardship (Timber cuts, tree thins, controlled burns, etc)

  • British Columbia fire perimeters (Alberta, Yukon and NW Territory coming when available)
  • We show you how to create Tree Canopy maps (Density of trees, good canopies = good picking!)

  • We show you several ways to add better Road, 4wd road, ATV Trail, hiking trails, gates and road closures to your maps
